Manual software installation in Linux

Manually installing software on Linux involves the following steps

Extract gzipped archive

tar xvfz software.tgz

The directory, which the source files are extracted to, MUST NOT be the same as the installation directory (see next step)

Configure

./configure -prefix=/home/you/install_dir (optional: ... 2>&1 | tee configure.log - this will store the output in the file configure.log)

Important: the above specifies that the installation directory is /home/you/install_dir; this must not be the dir, where the source files (i.e. the extracted archive) reside

Build

make (optional: ... 2>&1 | tee make.log)

Install

make install (optional: ... 2>&1 | tee install.log)
